Texas BOMA Holds State Advocacy Day in Austin

Wednesday, March 22, 2017

More than 100 members of Texas BOMA gathered in Austin, Texas in late February to lobby their state legislators. Holding meetings with more than 100 legislative offices, BOMA members spoke with lawmakers on issues important to commercial real estate in the Lone Star State, such as property tax appraisal reform. With the steep rise in property valuations, correlating tax increases have become burdensome to Texas building owners and also have discouraged commercial development. Attendees also urged lawmakers to oppose legislation that would require owners to create a retainage trust fund account for the benefit of contractors and subcontractors. Property owners already use contractual retainage on construction projects as needed, mandating it would only increase construction costs.

Texas BOMA members also were treated to a reception that featured legislative updates from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Texas State Comptroller Glen Hegar. Both the House and Senate recognized Texas BOMA during their legislative sessions for their contributions to Texas commercial real estate.
