Call to Action! Help BOMA Texas Educate Elected Officials about Property Taxes!
Texas State Capital PhotoAs you are probably aware, the Texas Legislature will convene in a special session on July 18. The legislature is limited to considering legislation that the Governor puts on the call for the special session. Governor Abbott has already named property tax reform as an item for consideration.

Texas BOMA recently met with Senator Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston), a friend of Texas BOMA and a staunch advocate for property tax reform. As you will recall, Senator Bettencourt authored SB 2 during the regular session and continues to push for both property appraisal reform and more taxpayer input into property tax rates. Senator Bettencourt anticipates filing similar legislation for the special session and believes the bill will be heard in the Senate Finance Committee the week of July 24.

This is a top priority for Texas BOMA. Many of our cities are now seeing significant increases in property tax appraisal valuations, and have seen substantial increases above the effective tax rate year on year. The result of the increased tax rate and increased valuations are higher taxes and litigation over appraisals, resulting in cost increases for our owners and our tenants. We need to work hard to help the legislature take up and pass this important legislation.

We need your help! Texas BOMA will hold a Statewide Advocacy day in Austin on Tuesday, July 25th, to support property tax reform. Please mark your calendars now to attend this event – particularly if you participated in Advocacy Day earlier this year. While there will not be a cost to attend, we do need you to RSVP so that we may confirm attendees for team assembly purposes.

Thank you for your participation in this important industry event.
