Drainage Charge May Change in July Impervious Cover Data Being Updated
water drainage mapThe City of Austin is updating the impervious cover data used to calculate the drainage charge, which is assessed on City of Austin utility bills. This update may cause changes to your drainage charge. The amount of the change, if any, will be different for each property. In about 70% of cases, there will be either no change to the drainage charge or a change of less than $1 per month. For others, there will be a larger increase or decrease to the drainage charge. The changes will take affect with July utility bills.

The drainage charge is most likely to have changed if one of the following applies:
  • Improvements were made to the property between 2012 and 2015 (shed, deck, addition, etc.)
  • The property is shady with lots of trees
  • The property has been subdivided or merged with another property
  • The property has unpaved areas used for storage (i.e., landscaping supplies, junk yard, auto lot, etc.)
  • The impervious cover was previously estimated through building permit data instead of aerial photography (i.e., it was developed between 2012 and 2015)
For an estimate of your July drainage charge, please use the "Find My Drainage Charge" tool on the website.
